Unlike most of the internet (so it seems) I don’t think that the lack of missions to the moon or Mars currently are a significant loss. I also don’t think it’s a bad thing that the horribly expensive and inefficient Shuttles have been grounded permanently.
There are better, more efficient and cheaper ways to advance space flight and our knowledge of space than that sort of grandstanding.
Now capturing a near earth orbit asteroid, bringing it into orbit and using it as a future base.… That’s a goal worth having.
