Have Video Games Actually Improved Since The Previous Console Generation?
It’s been interesting playing with my old PS2 for the last couple of days. The games… don’t feel old. If I play an old ATARI game, or a SNES game, those feel dated. But the PS2 stuff… it really doesn’t.
Sure the graphics on modern consoles are better and we’ve got some clever new control mechanisms. But that’s surface stuff really. What has actually improved between something like Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance in 2001 and anything released today?

We go back and play “Knights of the Old Republic” (the console game, not the MMO) on a regular basis. It doesn’t get old.
Every time I see someone with a gaming console I tell them. “That’s a fairly decent dedicated gaming-pc”
I don’t think there’s been any really major advances when it comes to PC gaming either to be honest. Bigger and flashier graphics pretty much covers it.
Yep. That’s exactly what they are. And with a teenager in the house who seems to be completely unable to tell the difference between downloading from a trusted site and infecting his computer with every virus known to man, that’s a good thing.
The only reason that consoles really exist nowadays is because of the games that developers make for them. If you like Halo, you’re stuck with 360. If you like Mario, you’re stuck with Nintendo. Open up to cross-platform development and I don’t think consoles would survive much. It’s about profit, they can sell the drugs and the implements to use them
+Nobilis Reed good point… lol
As long as he’s in the house, we’re going to be console gamers.
We have PCs and laptops in the house as well, but honestly the console is just much more comfortable for playing on a big screen tv. The form factor works.
every now and then, there’s a flash of brilliance.….like Portal or Scribblenauts
