Well maybe not all pulp sensibilities. But particularly some of what I consider the core elements of pulp.
For my tastes an increasing amount of modern fiction has become too cynical and ironic (and considering how ironic and cynical I tend to be, that’s actually rather alarming).
I’m not looking for a pulp pastiche… which is basically just pulp storytelling only with irony! I actually like the notion of some stories where the hero is actually primarily you know… a hero.
I used to say that everything in the world was shades of grey. I’ve refined that viewpoint a bit. I think actually it’s all shades of brown.
But while some see that as reason for greater sophistication (as they would see it) in their fiction, I see it as a strong argument for giving us something less murky in our stories.
It’s not that I want everything to switch over to this style of storytelling, but from Battlestar Galactica to Superman it just feels like everything is being made darker and grimmer and more realistic and I’d like something else.
