Well the internet has been on form this week hasn’t it? Now you can certainly point out that DC Comics is frequently it’s own worst enemy, but that doesn’t absolve everyone else from guilt.
The Harley Quinn fuss is a great example. Website and social media have been buzzing about DC’s competition for artists to draw a female naked and committing suicide.
Few of the articles and even fewer of the social media commentators took the time to research the character or the creators behind this particular competition.
Even worse though is that almost no one did what should be the most obvious and basic thing.
They didn’t bother to ask themselves, could there be another explanation?
As Jim Lee illustrates in the tweets highlighted in this Bleeding Cool article. Yes… there could be a dozen or more other explanations.
But that doesn’t give a blog the shocking headline that will guarantee website views. And it doesn’t give people on social media that nice buzz of feeling holier than someone (anyone will do). Or make for an easy 140 character quip.
If I seem increasingly critical (I’ve never exactly been positive) of blogging and social media and increasingly negative about the people who do it… this is a prime example of why.
Now someone is going to feel the need to retort that well this is just DC covering themselves. Because that is the world social media lives in. Everyone is guilty until proved innocent.
But here’s the thing. Even if that is actually the case and it is DC covering themselves. You wouldn’t know it because you never bothered to do the research to find out did you?
