There’s a good article over at Bleeding Cool about why this Dredd Day of Action won’t actually get a sequel, but maybe you should do it anyway.
The author is getting beaten up in the comments over there for shitting on fans or other such nonsense. Which is just the sort of thing that makes me loathe fans really.
Just because you want something to happen. Just because it deserves to happen. That doesn’t mean it will. And in the case of Dredd the numbers are all against it.
Depending on who you believe Dredd made between $35 million and $41 million at the worldwide box office. Off a production budget of between $35 million and $50 million.
I emphasize production budget because there are a lot of other expenses involved in releasing a movie to theaters. So the rule of thumb apparently is you want the movie to make twice it’s production costs in theaters then it’s home box office sales are pure profit.
Well even taking the most favorable numbers $41 million off a production budget of $35 million is a long, long way short of double. Which means unless the DVD and blu-ray says are through the rough for months the movie is not going to make the sort of profit that would justify a sequel. Sequels after all generally perform worse than the original.
Stating that isn’t beating up on fans. It’s just math.
But hey, it’s a good movie. You should buy a copy and watch it. Buy a copy for your friends for that matter. Just don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re changing anything.
